Below you can see a slow motion video of wave propagation. © Most Rights Reserved. When the drop hits the milk, it causes a wave to be formed. This wave is similar to a sound wave and spreads out. Milk is more viscous than water, which is why you get a large column of milk pushed back up in the middle of the ripples.
