Profile

I am a fulltime PhD student researching vibro-acoustic emission of non-stationary steering noises and how these noises are perceived by passengers inside the cabin. The project is funded by ZF Lenksysteme GmbH (ZFLS) - Germany. My research supervisor, Prof. Andy Moorhouse, and my co-supervisor Dr. Francis Li at University of Salford (UoS) give me academic support and supply me with information and know-how.

About the Project:

External dynamic forces – e.g. tie rod forces (EFR) due to driving on uneven pavement - might possibly breed generation of non-stationary structure-borne sound inside the steering system (StSys).

Under certain conditions these noises can be propagated through several transfer paths to the driver’s ear. Owing to the mostly transient characteristics these sounds normally are not masked by collateral (quasi-)stationary operational noises, for instance the functional noise of the vehicle’s engine or rolling noise. Therefore, the inoffensive non-stationary steering noise might easily be misconstrued as malfunction of the StSys by passengers. To better understand the mentioned phenomenon and to make it accessible to designers this project aspires to characterise transient sound sources within the StSys , the emission of structure-borne sound respectively and to investigate the related “perception of
a fault” in the driver.

About me

In 2007 I graduated from the University of Applied Science Karlsruhe - “Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft” (Karlsruhe, Germany) with a BSc (Hon) (Dipl.-Ing.(FH)) in mechanical engineering. 2009 I finished my postgraduate study (MSc) in mechanical engineering and mechatronics. In the course of my studies I focused on vibrations and acoustics. Since September 2009 I am a split site PhD student at UoS working for ZFLS in Germany. In my spare time I enjoy playing guitar in my German band (Final Kings) and listening to a wide range of music. Besides I also enjoy (extreme) sports like skydiving, kitesurfing, scuba-diving and snowboarding.
