S Angus, "The Effects of Specular Versus Diffuse Reflections on the Frequency
Response at the Listner", Journal of the Audio Engineering Society, Vol
49, no 3, March 2001, pp 125-133.
The time evolution of sound energy and the reverberation in control rooms are important in the acoustical design of control and listening rooms. These rooms are frequently designed to achieve a large initial-time- delay gap between the direct sound from the loudspeakers and the first early reflections, which allows the sound engineers and producers to listen through the system to the acoustic space being recorded. This is accomplished in a variety of ways based on absorption, specially shaped walls, and diffusion..

Speech for Teleconferencing", Journal of the Audio Engineering Society, Vol
48, no 9, September 2000, pp 771-785.
Teleconferencing audio can be enhanced by employing spatial audio reproduction using loudspeakers. It is important that any perceptual realism which is added by spatial audio does not compromise the perceived comprehension of the transmitted teleconferencing communications. Formal testing methods are used to verify that the spatial speech reproduction does not compromise perceived performance relative to nonspatialized reproduction..
3. James A.S. Angus, "Using Grating Modulation to Achieve Wideband Large
Area Diffusers", Applied Acoustics, vol. 60, no. 2, 2000, pp. 143-165. .
Concatenating individual diffusers to form larger ones narrows their diffusion pattern into specific directions. Solutions are proposed which use modulation of existing diffusion structures with other sequences to achieve the improved diffusion patterns. These techniques provide large area diffusion structures that do not suffer from having narrowed diffusion patterns. It can also be used to develop diffusion structures that have specific diffusion patterns or have an extended frequency range. They also have the advantage that they can be implemented easily using existing diffusers. The theory, design, advantages and limitations of these structures will be discussed and simulation results of their performance will be presented.

Reflection Gratings for Wideband Diffusion", Journal of the Audio Engineering
Society, Vol 46, no 12, December 1998, pp 1109-1118.
A technique, which uses two basic quadratic residue diffusors of different lengths, can remove the lobe narrowing that normally occurs when two diffusors are concatenated. An extended frequency performance range and a smoother diffusion response are achieved using the authors' composite design criteria. By employing these composite design sequences, the diffusion performance approaches that of a single sequence diffusor.

Function Measurements using Surface Spherical Harmonics", Journal of the Acoustical
Society of America, vol 104, no 4, October, 1998, pp 2400-2411.).
A continuous, functional representation of a large set of head-related transfer function measurements (HRTFs) is developed. The HRTFs are represented as a weighted sum of surface spherical harmonics (SSHs) up to degree 17. A Gaussian quadrature method is used to pick out a set of experimentally efficient measurement directions. Anechoic impulse responses are measured for these directions between a source loudspeaker and the entrance to the ear canal of a head-and-torso simulator (HATS). Three separate SSH analyses are carried out: The first forms a SSH representation from the time responses, with the variable onset delay caused by interaural differences intact, by applying the analysis to each time sample in turn. The second SSH model is formed in exactly the same way, except using impulse responses in which the variable onset delays have been equalized. The final SSH analysis is carried out in the frequency domain by applying the technique on a frequency bin by frequency bin basis to the magnitude and unwrapped phase responses of the HRTFs. The accuracy and interpolation performance of each of the computed SSH models is investigated, and the usefulness of the SSH technique in analyzing directional hearing and, particularly, in spatializing sounds is discussed.

Inverse Filtering", Electronics Letters, Vol 32 Part 3, 1st February 1996,
pp 192-193.
The problem of a subjective versus objective analysis of glottal waveforms obtained through inverse filtering of the acoustic waveform is discussed. It is shown that a dynamical system phase plane plot can be used to view the residual resonance characteristics and hence assess the quality of the glottal waveform.
