Profile

I joined the School of Acoustics and Audio Engineering in 1998 as a Research Assistant after graduating from the University of Manchester with BA (Hons) Linguistics, where I specialised in phonetics and spectrographic speech analysis. My initial role in the school was as a developer of CAL materials, having worked as a freelance multimedia designer and producer/developer of Enhanced CDs for national and international clients including The British Council, Futuresonic, Flux Magazine, Castlefield Gallery, and Fred Perry. My interest in the evaluation of Learning Technologies led to my taking on a wider role within the University in the area of e-learning, heading the evaluation team for the University of Salford E-learning pilot project (2000-2002), the result of which was the establishment of a Learning Technologies Centre to support the development and application of learning technologies throughout the university.

Since 2000 I have worked on a variety of funded projects (FP7, EU Socrates-Minerva, EPSRC, and ESF) in various capacities from researcher and evaluator to project coordinator and academic director.  The common themes of these projects are the use of Information and Communication Technologies in Teaching and Learning.

From November 2004 – January 2007 I was the Project Coordinator/Academic Director of ESMOS, a European Socrates-Minerva funded international project partnership of 6 European universities with the combined aims of developing, evaluating and modelling the use of Virtual Learning Environments and online technologies to support international mobility students. The ESMOS project explored a variety of online and mobile technologies, mainly centering around blog-based communities, but including wikis and SMS/MMS for the support of international student mobility (both physical and virtual), receiving a rare 'outstanding' final grading from the EU for its innovative use of (what were then) new web technologies.

From October 2007 I began working on two 2-year projects under the European Lifelong Learning Program; VITAE (Web 2.0 Teacher Training across Europe) and ICONET (developing online tools for the translation of informal learning competences into formal European frameworks). I am also an associate partner on the FP7 MATURE project (knowledge assets and knowledge management).

TEACHING

I coordinate/deliver a variety of Multimedia and Enterprise modules within CSE, at undergraduate and postgraduate level, including:

I also give the occasional guest lecture to MSc students on the following modules:

In 2008 I received FHEA recognition (Fellow of the Higher Education Academy)

RESEARCH

I am a member of the Information Systems, Organisation and Society Research Centre which is part of the Informatics Research Institute (IRIS). IRIS was rated 6*(A) as a result of the 2001 RAE making it one of the leading IS research groups in the UK. My research focuses on Technology, Society and Organisations, specifically within Higher Education and the AV industries. Research interests include:
