Professional Activities

Provide consultancy services to industry on building acoustics and environmental noise assessment since 1992. Typical projects include: assessment of environmental noise from power generating plants and quarries; assessment of noise impact on nearby residence from the Manchester Airport second runway; review of the effectiveness of current UK environmental noise legislation; and modelling of noise and vibration of offshore installations. Currently an associate of the UK Building Research Establishment.

Referee for the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, Journal of Applied Acoustics, Acta Acustica, and the Journal of Building Acoustics.

Reviewer for EPSRC on research grant applications.

Member of the IOA Research Committee to promote acoustics research in UK

Member of the International Standards Organisation Working Group ISO/TC 43/SC 2/WG 25 on "Building acoustics- measurements of the random incidence scattering coefficient of surfaces".

Member of the ISO/TC43/SC1/WG50 on "Acoustics - Guidelines for Noise Control by Screens in Offices and Factories".

Member of the BSI Committee EH/1/3 on Residential and Industrial Noise.

Member of the UK ESDU Plc. Working Party on Duct Acoustic Liners which aims to publish an industrial standard method of calculating noise in aero-engines.

Collaboration with the other UK universities to form an Engineering Network in acoustics. Collaboration with other research institutions throughout Europe in EC funded building and environmental noise research and development projects.
