Refraction.
Trains often sound louder at night. During the day the sound from the train spreads evenly out and is often blocked by houses and hills.
At night the ground and the air next to it cools quickly.
Sound waves travel more slowly through cold air.
This change in speed causes a bending effect and the sound can travel over objects and further along the ground.
